Our team recently had the privilege of visiting a prison in Mukdahan, in northeast Thailand. We spent time with inmates preparing for their release and reintegration into society.

For many of these men, the thought of leaving prison brings both hope and fear. After years behind bars, the outside world can feel unfamiliar and intimidating. Society often looks down on ex-offenders, and many struggle to find acceptance, employment, and a sense of belonging. That's why preparation before release is so crucial.

How do you find your place in society again?
During our visit, we spoke openly with the inmates about several important topics that can help them rebuild their lives. First, we discussed re-establishing your place in society. Reintegration isn't easy. Relationships can be broken, opportunities can be limited, and trust often needs to be rebuilt. We encouraged the inmates to think about their future, the choices they want to make, and the kind of life they want to build when they leave prison.

Consequences of violence
We also discussed the consequences of violence. Many people in prison have experienced violence in various forms—both as victims and perpetrators. Violence leaves deep wounds—not only for victims, but also for families and communities. We talked about the importance of choosing a different path and how better choices can change the course of their lives.

Prisoners have rights too
Another important topic we discussed was human rights. Every person, regardless of past mistakes, has inherent worth and dignity. Understanding human rights helps people recognize their own worth and their responsibility to others. Respect, empathy, and responsibility are essential foundations for building healthy communities.

Years of experience in prison work
For Siam-Care, this visit to Mukdahan was particularly meaningful because prison work has been part of our work for many years. In the past, we regularly visited prisons in central Thailand, spending time with inmates, listening to their stories, and offering encouragement and guidance. These visits allowed us to build relationships and support inmates as they reflect on their lives and futures.

Great stigma
Sadly, ex-offenders are often stigmatized and ostracized by society. Many people only see their mistakes and not their potential for growth. This makes it incredibly difficult for them to start over after their release. At Siam-Care, we believe differently. We believe that everyone deserves a second chance. People are more than the worst decisions they've made, and everyone deserves to be treated with respect, compassion, and love.

In Jesus' footsteps
Our work is also deeply inspired by the message of the Bible. Throughout the Bible, we see that God is a God of restoration, forgiveness, and new beginnings. Jesus himself showed compassion for those rejected by society and gave them hope for a new life.

No judgement but hope
When we visit prisons, we don't come with judgment. We come with hope. Our goal is to encourage inmates to believe that their future can be different from their past. A listening ear, a word of encouragement, or a message of hope can sometimes make a life-changing difference.

Bij Siam-Care geloven we dat ieder mens hoop, waardigheid en de kans op een nieuw begin verdient.
