Tang (2010) is a 14-year-old girl who has a somewhat complicated family situation. She lives in the northeast of Thailand with her grandmother and several half-brothers and sisters. Her mother has had 5 children with different fathers and is usually absent. Furthermore, there is an aunt living in the house with 2 children, whose father is a drug addict. Just like mother.
Tang's father has been out of the picture since she was young. He is in no way showing any responsibly for his daughters, which is unfortunately common in Thailand. Grandma takes care of Tang but also works full-time, because she is the only one who can work. Grandma's brother is still alive but is a drug addict and is only pretty much always absent. Fortunately, there is an aunt who helps to look after the children, the youngest of whom is only 2 and has medical problems. Because of this, aunt cannot work. Grandma works hard but earns far too little to feed the 10 mouths and help the children go to school. The family struggles to survive and Tang is given a lot of (parenting) responsibility for a 14-year-old girl.
Favorite subject
Tang is a responsible girl who is in the second year of high school. She works hard at school and her favorite subject is math. She has no specific hobbies, also because in her free time she is mainly busy looking after the other six children in the house, who are all younger than Tang.
